Mocca

 Mocca

Remembering Mocca Mocca was with our family for 17 years—so long that it is difficult to separate our memories of him from the history of the family itself.

Mocca had a peculiar sense of duty.
He needed to know where everyone in the house was, and what they were doing.
If someone went missing, he would worry.
That, it seemed, was his job.
Once, I collapsed in front of the first-floor bathroom.
The rest of the family was asleep, each on their own floor.
Mocca was the only one who noticed. He stayed by my side.
The same was true when I came home from surgery.
He listened to me, but with everyone else — my husband especially — he gave orders.
If we stopped to chat on a walk, Mocca decided it was time to go home.
He’d set off alone, glance back after a few steps, keep walking.
We’d have no choice but to chase him down and bring him back.
And then he’d do the same thing all over again.
He was a very difficult dog.
Mocca always paid close attention to those around him.
When my niece fell behind at the beach, Mocca went back on his own to get her.
He was only five months old then.
The same was true when Winston came.
No matter how much he pestered him, Mocca never got angry.
He knew Winston was still a puppy.
When Winston grew up, Mocca started snapping at him when he was too much.
He changed how he treated others depending on who they were, I think.
When Maui was still young, if we put him in a crate for toilet training, Mocca would let him out. Pushing, pulling, crawling under. He wanted to play. And it was Mocca who taught him how to climb rocks.
After Maui lost his sight, he would sometimes fall behind on our walks.
Ten meters back, Maui left behind.
He stands still, looking anxious.
We stop, unsure what to do.
Then Mocca walks back to where Maui is.
He circles him once, and comes back to us.
Maui starts walking.
Following Mocca’s scent, back to us.
Maui always needed Mocca.
Mocca knew that.
Mocca was a dog who took his duty seriously, and was proud of it.
And in that duty, there was always someone.
